CCTV with DVR: The Basics

There are various different ways of setting up a CCTV system. One is to use DVR recorders (digital video recorders) as standalone devices which record surveillance video continuously.

Since the CCTV DVR recorder will have a multiplexer built in, images from several cameras can be seen simultaneously on a single screen With 4 channel DVR, for example, you can connect up to four cameras, using either a wireless or wired CCTV system, to the device.

The DVR has a LAN port which you can hook to your router or modem which has an Internet connection. This will allow you to access and control your DVR remotely online, and see recorded images live or played back.

With this remote access solution for your security cameras, recording can still go on while you are playing back, and you can see your images from anywhere in the world. With some systems, it’s also possible to receive remote alarm notification, and to install motion detection features.

What is DVR CCTV?

Digital video recorders take analogue pictures using CCTV cameras, and then digitise the pictures before storing them electronically. Typically, the media for this storage is a hard disk, like the one used in the majority of personal computers.

Today, most DVR CCTV also makes use of a multiplexer and motion detect functions, and, in fact, it is generally considered the most significant way forward for CCTV recording.

These types of security cameras can be classified in two main categories – standalone black box and PC-based solutions. The former are particularly easy to install, with a single box for recording, multiplexing, alarms and motion detection.

Using a DVR also makes a higher resolution of image possible, and provides almost instant access to recording from a known time and date. When copies are taken, quality is not compromised.

There is also a large storage capacity, so there is no need to change tapes often. Events can also be recorded in real-time before an alarm occurs.

Finally, there is enhanced playback, which can also be done by forwarding and reversing, frame by frame. For remote viewing , this type of system is easy to hook up to networks and the Internet.
